Isasumi Shrine

Isasumi Shrine, located near the southern tip of the Aizu Basin, is the oldest shrine in the Tohoku region. According to shrine legend, the shrine was founded in B.C., and is also known as the birthplace of the name of the Aizu region. 2008 fire destroyed the main shrine building, but it has maintained its solemn atmosphere as a sanctuary. The shrine also boasts a rich natural forest and a shrine garden with seasonal expressions, including the natural monuments Usuzumi-zakura cherry blossoms and wisteria.

Aizu Wakamatsu

Aizu Wakamatsu weaves its long history in the Aizu Basin, which stretches to the west of Lake Inawashiro. Aizu Wakamatsu has flourished as one of the leading cities in the Tohoku region since the Warring States Period (1467-1590), and is blessed with many historical sites. The most well-known examples are Tsurugajo Castle, known for its beautiful castle tower, and Iimoriyama, the scene of the tragedy of the Boshin War (1868-1869). The former castle town is still lined with retro-style warehouses and Western-style buildings, and there are many places to stop by, including restaurants boasting local cuisine and stores selling cute traditional toys such as akabeko (red cow) and okiage koboshi (a small doll with a raised head).
