Archaeological Site of Ollantaytambo
The magnificent archaeological site of Ollantaytambo were built on a hill facing the Urubamba Valley on the way to Machu Picchu from Cusco. "Ollantay" is the name of a general of the Inca Empire and "Tambo" means a travel inn. It is said to have been a lodging place for travelers on the Inca Trail that stretched throughout the empire, or a religious facility dedicated to the sun god. It is one of the most spectacular ruins in Peru, with various remains of stone masonry, megaliths, and other structures that were created using the sophisticated techniques of the Inca civilization.
