Mount Misen

Rising 535 meters above sea level in the center of Miyajima, Mount Misen is a sacred mountain that has been revered as a Shinto shrine since ancient times. From the top of the mountain, where the deity resides, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the islands, large and small, floating in the Seto Inland Sea, which explains why Miyajima is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan. The first prime minister of Japan, Hirobumi Ito, built a trail up to the top of the mountain, and now it has become a highlight of Miyajima sightseeing along with Itsukushima Shrine.

Since ancient times, Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Prefecture has appeared in waka poems and paintings as a place of scenic beauty and is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan. The island has been worshipped as the island of the gods, and its unique culture and unspoiled virgin forest still live on. After visiting the quaint shrines and temples, you can take the ropeway up the Mount Misen and look out over the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, or indulge in the famous oysters and momiji manju (steamed buns) along the approach.
