Konpon Daito

Kukai, the founder of Mount Koya, built the Konpon Daito (Great Pagoda) as the center of Shingon esoteric Buddhism. It is said that the construction of the temple began in 816 and was completed by the second generation, Shinzen Daitoku, in 886. The pagoda has served as a symbol of Mount Koya since that time, and even today, its imposing vermilion color that shines against the blue sky is impressive, making it a highlight of Mount Koya tourism.

Koyasan

Koyasan was established by Kukai in 816 as a place for Zen practice. Koyasan, the head temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, was built in the basin surrounded by mountains, and has been worshipped as a holy place to this day. In addition to visiting the temples, visitors can stay in lodgings to experience ascetic practices, taste vegetarian cuisine, and have other valuable experiences.
