Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine, located in the bay of Miyajima, has the divine mountain of Mount Misen as its backdrop, and its vermilion torii gate and main shrine pavilions float in the Seto Inland Sea, creating a unique landscape. The beauty of the shrine has been written about in poetry since ancient times, and in the Edo period (1603-1868), it became famous as a tourist attraction that everyone wanted to visit. The architectural beauty of the shrine, with its many halls and corridors, and the scenery that changes completely depending on the tide, are the highlights of the site.

Miyajima

Since ancient times, Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Prefecture has appeared in waka poems and paintings as a place of scenic beauty and is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan. The island has been worshipped as the island of the gods, and its unique culture and unspoiled virgin forest still live on. After visiting the quaint shrines and temples, you can take the ropeway up the Mount Misen and look out over the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, or indulge in the famous oysters and momiji manju (steamed buns) along the approach.
