Goshikinuma
Goshikinuma is one of the most famous scenic spots in Urabandai, a treasure trove of natural beauty. It was formed in 1888 when an eruption caused the northern slope of Mt. Bandai to collapse, damming the river and forming hundreds of lakes and marshes. The 30 or so lakes and swamps in the area are known as Goshikinuma. The name “Goshiki (five colors)” comes from the various colors the surface of the water appears to be due to its volcanic composition and vegetation. There are hiking trails around the lakes, where visitors can enjoy the scenery of the four seasons.
Mount Bandai Area
Mount Bandai, the symbol of Fukushima, is an eye-catching, graceful mountain. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery, including the vast Lake Inawashiro and a variety of lakes and marshes created by the eruptions of the Meiji era (1868-1912). The plateau known as Urabandai is a major resort area where you can fully enjoy the rich nature. Many people come here to enjoy activities such as canoeing and kayaking in summer and skiing in winter.
