Hieizan Driveway
The Hieizan Driveway is a scenic road that connects the foot of Mount Hiei with the summit of the mountain, offering beautiful nature and magnificent views. 8.1 km long, the road was opened in 1958, and there are many stops along the way, such as Enryakuji Temple with its rich history and an observatory from which you can see Lake Biwa and the city of Kyoto. When combined with the Oku-Hiei Driveway, which leads from Hieizan to Ogoto, you can enjoy a pleasant 20-km drive through the mountains.
Otsu
Otsu, the ancient capital of Japan, has nurtured a history of more than 1,300 years since its capital was established in the Asuka Period (592-710). As the outer port of Heian-kyo, Otsu became a strategic point for traffic on the lake and also prospered as a post town on the Tokaido highway. In the beautiful natural setting of the Hira and Hiei mountains and Lake Biwa, there are many temples and shrines that offer a taste of travel.
