Lake Biwa
Lake Biwa is Japan’s largest lake. It covers around 670 square kilometers, about one-sixth of Shiga Prefecture, and reaching a depth of approximately 104 meters, also holding the largest volume of water in the country. Featured in traditional songs and stories, and once thriving as a key route for transporting people and goods to the ancient capital, Lake Biwa has long played a central role in local life and culture. From visiting lakeside castles and temples to enjoying swimming and fishing, the vast lake offers a wide range of activities.
Otsu
Otsu, the ancient capital of Japan, has nurtured a history of more than 1,300 years since its capital was established in the Asuka Period (592-710). As the outer port of Heian-kyo, Otsu became a strategic point for traffic on the lake and also prospered as a post town on the Tokaido highway. In the beautiful natural setting of the Hira and Hiei mountains and Lake Biwa, there are many temples and shrines that offer a taste of travel.
