Chicago "L", the public rail system that connects Chicago's inner city and suburbs, is the third busiest mass transit system in the U.S., with eight lines. In the center of the city, elevated lines are located directly above the streets in a grid pattern. The sight of trains passing between skyscrapers and cars sliding between steel piers beneath them is a familiar sight that is unique to Chicago.
