Onigajo

Onigajo is a stair-stepped castle formed by the uplift of a sea cave eroded by the waves of the Kumano Sea due to an earthquake. This scenic spot, with its unique rock formations stretching about 1.2 km, is located at the southernmost end of the rias coastline that extends south from the Shima Peninsula. As you walk along the well-maintained promenade, strange rocks appear one after another. You will be overwhelmed by the rough shapes carved by the waves.

Iseji, Kumano Kodo

The Kumano Kodo is a pilgrimage route to Kumano, which has flourished since the Middle Ages as the largest sacred site in Japan. Among them, the "Iseji" is a 170-km pilgrimage route connecting Ise Shrine and Kumano Sanzan (three shrines of Kumano), which was crowded with ordinary people in the Edo period (1603-1868). In recent years, walking courses along the path, which still retains the beautiful stone pavement and scenic coastline, have become popular.
