Doctor Yellow
Doctor Yellow is a special inspection train that helps ensure the safe operation of the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. Painted bright yellow to stand out from the usual white bullet trains, it is a rare sight—and is often said to bring good luck to those who see it. Loved by rail fans as the “doctor of the Shinkansen,” the trains currently in service are scheduled to retire in 2027, making chances to see this iconic yellow train increasingly rare.
Kyoto Station Area
Kyoto Station is the gateway to Kyoto, where the Shinkansen and other railroads depart and arrive. The landmark of the station is the open-air station building with its huge atrium and the uniquely shaped Kyoto Tower towering across from it. Although it is far from the center of the city, there are plenty of department stores, underground shopping malls, and sightseeing spots that can be reached on foot, such as Toji Temple, Sanjusangendo Temple, and Umekoji Park.
