Shionomisaki Lighthouse
Shionomisaki Lighthouse is a white stone lighthouse standing at Cape Shionomisaki, the southernmost point of Honshu. Built in 1878, it has continued to guide ships sailing these waters for nearly 150 years. It is one of 18 “visitable lighthouses” in Japan open to the public, and from the top you can enjoy sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Nearby on Oshima Island stands Kashinozaki Lighthouse, making it possible to explore two historic lighthouses in a single trip.
Kushimoto
Kushimoto Town, at the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula, stretches along the Pacific coast. Part of the Nanki Kumano Geopark, it is known for its many scenic spots. Visiting highlights such as Hashigui-iwa and the Ichimai-iwa rock formation along the Kozagawa River is a popular way to experience its natural beauty. Among them, Cape Shionomisaki—the southernmost point of Honshu—is especially well known. An observation tower and a marine park offer plenty of ways to enjoy the ocean.
