Mikata Five Lakes

The Mikata Five Lakes consist of five lakes, Mikata, Suigetsu, Suga, Kugushi, and Hiruga, which stretch just inside Wakasa Bay. Lake Mikata is freshwater, Lake Hiraga is saltwater, and the others are brackish water. Each of the brackish water lakes has a different ratio of seawater to freshwater, and one of the main features is that the color of the water looks slightly different.

Wakasa

Wakasa, with its rich fishing grounds in Wakasa Bay, has prospered since ancient times as a land of Miketsukuni, where marine products were delivered to the Imperial Court. In the Edo period (1603-1868), Wakasa developed as a major shipping center, and the route for transporting marine products to Kyoto was called the Saba Kaido (mackerel road). Along the road, there are still lodging towns that retain the atmosphere of those days. Wakasa, a treasure trove of seafood, is full of attractions, including many scenic spots with beautiful scenery.
