Zermatt, Switzerland
Gornergrat Railway
The Gornergrat Railway, opened in 1898, is a mountain railroad connecting Zermatt, a village at the foot of the mountain, and Gornergrat, surrounded by Alpine mountains. It takes about 35 minutes to slowly ascend from the 1,604-meter-high Zermatt station to the 3,089-meter-high Gornergrat station, a difference of 1,469 meters in elevation and a total distance of about 9 kilometers. Since the entire line runs outdoors without a single underground tunnel, the greatest attraction of the train is the spectacular view of the Alps from the windows of the train.
Matterhorn
Located on the border between Switzerland and Italy, the 4,478-meter-high Matterhorn is one of the most beautiful mountains in the Alps. The sharp, pyramid-like peak against the blue sky is a magnet for people from all over the world. There are many observation spots and hiking trails that allow non-mountaineers to view the mountain easily, including a mountain climbing train and a ropeway.
