Ushiku Daibutsu
Standing at 120 meters, the Ushiku Daibutsu is the tallest bronze statue in the world. It was built in 1993 by the Higashi Honganji Temple of the Jodo Shinshu sect of Buddhism on land associated with the founder of the sect, Shinran. The statue’s scale is so immense that the Nara Daibutsu could fit in its palm, and it houses various facilities within its structure. The park around the statue features flower gardens that offer a stunning view of the Daibutsu against a backdrop of vibrant, seasonal flowers.
Tsuchiura, Ushiku
Kasumigaura is the second largest lake in Japan. On its western shore are the castle town of Tsuchiura, famous as a producer of lotus root, and Ushiku, known for its 120-meter-tall Buddha statue and Japan's first winery. The lakeside is well-equipped for leisure activities like boat cruises and fishing, but it’s also a great area for cycling and driving. This setting offers a delightful journey through both history and nature.
