Meknes
Meknes, an ancient city in northern Morocco, was the first capital of the Alawi dynasty, the current Moroccan dynasty, from 1672 to 1728. King Moulay Ismail, who was devoted to Louis XIV, built here a splendid city like Versailles. The old town is lined with elaborate buildings, including the Mansour Gate, said to be the most beautiful gate in Africa. The city is blessed with a mild climate and a laid-back atmosphere that only an ancient city can offer.
