Hjalteyri
Hjalteyri is a small fishing village on the outskirts of Akureyri, the central city of northern Iceland. Once a bustling place with a large herring factory in operation, it is now a quiet village of about 40 residents. The village along the fjord, with its lovely buildings, is perfect for a stroll. The former herring factory has been repurposed to host contemporary art exhibitions, whale watching, and other events popular with tourists.
Akureyri
Nestled at the far end of the Eyjafjörður, Akureyri is Iceland's second largest city, and is the economic and transportation center of the region. However, the small town with a population of 20,000 has a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. While staying here, you can enjoy a fulfilling trip to the surrounding tourist spots such as Lake Mývatn and the Ásbyrgi canyon, or participate in whale watching.
