Lake Miike

Lake Miike stands quietly at the foot of Takachiho Peak in the Kirishima mountain range. It is a crater lake created by a large eruption about 4,600 years ago. The vivid green forest surrounding the lake and the majestic Mount Takachihonomine towering over it create a beautiful landscape. There are camping grounds and a bird forest in the vicinity, making it a popular outdoor spot.

Kirishima has long attracted people with its beautiful scenery, including lakes created by volcanoes and unique vegetation. It was here that Ryoma Sakamoto, a hero of the last days of the Tokugawa Shogunate, and his wife, Oryo, chose to spend their first honeymoon in Japan.
