Salzburg, Austria
Salzach River
The Salzach River flows through western Austria and is one of the major rivers of the Alps. A tributary of the Inn River, it stretches for 225 kilometers. Until modern times, it served as an important route for transporting rock salt mined in the surrounding mountains, bringing prosperity to the towns along its banks. In Salzburg, one of the cities that flourished through the salt trade, the river creates a striking scene as it winds through the heart of the UNESCO-listed Old Town.
Salzburg
Salzburg, capital city of a state at central Austria, is located near the border with Germany. As its name "Salt Castle" implies, the city has prospered and grown wealthy through trade in the rock salt produced in the area. The old town, which retains its medieval atmosphere, is full of sights, including Hohensalzburg Fortress on top of a hill. The city is also famous as the birthplace of Mozart, and the annual summer music festival attracts classical music fans from all over the world.
