Cairo, Egypt
Manshiyat Naser
Manshiyat Naser, located on a section of Mokattam Hills, is a city where life is different from the rest of Cairo. In Egypt, where 90% of the population is Muslim, a minority of Coptic Orthodox Christians live here and make their living by collecting garbage and raising pigs. Egyptians do not like to set foot in the narrow alleys piled with garbage, but the cave churches and wall-to-wall graffiti create a unique and tasteful landscape.
Mokattam Hills
Mokattam Hills are located in the southeast of Cairo. It is known to have been a limestone quarry for building pyramids and temples in ancient times. The Citadel, the political center of successive Islamic empires, located on the northwestern edge of the hill, is a popular tourist attraction, but the observation point at the top of the hill is also a secretly popular spot. Visitors can relax in cafes and restaurants while enjoying the view of the city of Cairo and the eternal Nile River.
