Eastern Region, Iceland
Stuðlafoss
Stuðlafoss is a waterfall that cascades dramatically over cliffs of hexagonal basalt columns. It sits near Stuðlagil Canyon, one of the most scenic natural spots in East Iceland. Although not a large waterfall, the wide-open landscape surrounding it creates a truly striking view. With a parking area close by, you can easily walk right up to the falls and enjoy the powerful flow set against the sculpted basalt.
East Fjords of Iceland
The eastern coast of Iceland is formed by intricate fjords. The interior is a mountainous region that has long since ceased to be volcanically active, and the beautiful ridges of the mountains are a characteristic feature of the region. Far from Reykjavik, the town of Egilsstaðir is a good base from which to explore the fjord's small villages, mountains, waterfalls, lakes and other natural wonders.
