Koyasan Reihokan Museum

Mount Koya has been a major center of Shingon Buddhism and a place of pilgrimage since the 9th century. The Koyasan Reihokan Museum preserves and displays the many treasures that have been carefully passed down through its long history. Located close to the Kongobuji head temple and Danjo Garan, it is an easy stop for visitors, offering a chance to take a closer look at precious Buddhist statues and paintings designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties.

Koyasan

Koyasan was established by Kukai in 816 as a place for Zen practice. Koyasan, the head temple of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, was built in the basin surrounded by mountains, and has been worshipped as a holy place to this day. In addition to visiting the temples, visitors can stay in lodgings to experience ascetic practices, taste vegetarian cuisine, and have other valuable experiences.
