Lake Biwa Canal

The Lake Biwa Canal was constructed in the Meiji era (1868-1912) as a major reconstruction project to restore vitality to Kyoto, which had been in decline after the transfer of the capital to Tokyo. The canal is an active facility that draws water from Lake Biwa into Kyoto and is used for power generation and tap water. At the same time, it is attracting attention as a historically valuable industrial heritage. In spring, the cherry blossoms along the canal and on the Keage Incline create a beautiful scenery, and the area is especially crowded with people.

Okazaki

Okazaki is landmarked by the large torii gate of Heian Shrine. Okazaki has become a center of art and culture, with museums and theaters gathered in a spacious, open space. In between visiting museums, you may want to spend some time in one of the many cafes in the area.
