Hokkaido, Japan
Notsuke Peninsula
Notsuke Peninsula lies along the eastern coast of Hokkaido, midway between the Shiretoko and Nemuro peninsulas. Formed by sand carried and deposited by ocean currents, it is a rare landform known as a sand spit—and at 26 kilometers long, it is the largest of its kind in Japan. The wetlands that formed in the bay enclosed by the spit are designated under the Ramsar Convention and are home to beautiful wildflowers and a wide variety of migratory birds, including swans and red-crowned cranes.
Nemuro
The Nemuro Peninsula juts out to the far east of Hokkaido. There are many places of interest to visit, including Cape Nosappu, which overlooks the Habomai Islands, Lake Furen, which attracts many wild birds, Shunkokutai, a vast sandbar, and the Chashi Sites, which were once the site of Ainu rituals. The area is also known as a treasure trove of seafood, including the famous spiny king crab, salmon and saury, and is a popular destination for road trips where you can enjoy nature, culture and food.
