Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter

The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is lined with houses with white walls, namako walls and tiled roofs, and willow trees swaying in the wind along the waterways where riverboats pass by. The area retains the atmosphere of the time when the area flourished as an Edo shogunate territory and a center of goods. The mansions of wealthy merchants and Western-style buildings from the Taisho era (1912-1926) are now museums, cafes, and stores, and walking around them is a popular tourist activity.

Kurashiki is famous for the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter, which still retains the whitewashed houses of the Edo period (1603-1868) and is filled with a travel atmosphere. A ride on an old-fashioned riverboat will give you a taste of what it was like when the area flourished as a direct jurisdiction of the Shogunate. You can also enjoy the dazzling view of the Seto Ohashi Bridge from the observatory on Washu Mountain, or visit stores to find denim and canvas produced by the textile industry that has been around since ancient times.
