Cape Notoro
Cape Notoro juts out into the Sea of Okhotsk about 12 km north of Abashiri city area. The scenery changes dramatically from season to season: green grasslands and blue sea in summer, and a silver world and drift ice in winter. The atmospheric lighthouse built in the Taisho era (1912-1926) and cows grazing peacefully around the lighthouse add to the beauty of the scenery. The cape has gradually become well known as the setting for movies and commercials, and is now a major sightseeing spot in Abashiri.
Abashiri
Abashiri is a prosperous city on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk in eastern Hokkaido. One of the most popular winter common features in this region is the drift ice. Visitors can enjoy the unique beauty of the ice by taking an icebreaker, or by viewing the silvery white sea from Tentozan or Cape Notoro. In addition, there are many other attractive sightseeing spots where you can experience nature and history, from colorful seasonal flowers such as skunk cabbage, glasswort, and creeping phlox, to a museum that preserves the Okhotsk culture that flourished until the Middle Ages, and Abashiri Prison, a famous building of the Meiji era (1868-1912).
