Shoyeido was founded in the early 18th century, when Moriyoshi Rokuzaemon Hata, who headed the Tanba-Sasayama district of the present Kyoto prefecture, created a store called Sasaya. Moritusne, the third generation of the Hata family began to make incense. After nearly three hundred years, the Hata family continues to create an amazing array of fragrances. In 1897, in addition to the traditional incenses, they started making "modern-fragrant incense" for overseas markets, and became the first Japanese incense company to export products to the United States. Shoyeido not only produces traditional fragrances, but also is committed to refining and advancing skills for manufacturing incense. Nowadays they expand their activities globally with Shoyeido USA located in Boulder, Colorado. Shoyeido is also involved in the advancement and preservation of Japanese incense culture through various cultural activities including publications and workshops. They continue to write the pages of history in the world of Japanese “Incense-koh.”
