Salt Ponds of Maras
Forty kilometers north of Cusco, on the slopes of an Andean mountain, lies the terraced salt ponds of Maras. It is said that there are as many as 5,000 salt ponds, each about 5 square meters in size, and the sight of a series of pure white salt ponds is spectacular. During the dry season from May to October, you can see the locals harvesting salt by hand in the glistening salt ponds, and many tourists come to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the delicious salt souvenirs.
Sacred Valley
In the mountains of the Andes Mountains on the outskirts of Cusco lies the Urubamba Valley, also known as the "Sacred Valley". The colorful landscape surrounding the Urubamba River, the source of the Amazon, is dotted with small villages that coexist with the ruins of the Inca Empire. This is an area full of charms that you will want to take the time to explore. You can enjoy the countryside that has been around since the Inca period, see the beautiful ruins, and buy folk crafts and food in the bustling markets to experience the lives of the local people.
