Uji tea
Uji tea is famous as one of the three major teas in Japan. The history of Uji tea dates back to the early Kamakura period (1185-1333), and by the end of the 16th century, under the patronage of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Uji tea had become the most popular tea in Japan. Uji tea is especially famous for its gyokuro and matcha (powdered green tea), which are now very popular among tourists from overseas. There are many ways to enjoy Uji tea, such as visiting the beautiful tea fields in Wazuka and other areas, or enjoying sweets made with tea.
Uji
Along the scenic Uji River, which originates from Lake Biwa, the town of Uji is home to shrines, temples, and museums that tell the story of Heian (794-1185) culture to this day. It is blessed with cherry blossoms, hydrangeas, autumn leaves, and other seasonal flowers, and there are many leisurely walking trails. One of the most enjoyable things to do in Uji is to visit the tea stores of the tea companies that produce the traditional Uji tea and taste the tea and sweets.
