Dom Luís I Bridge
The Dom Luís I Bridge connects the Old Town of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia on the other side of the Douro River. The iron bridge, opened in 1886, is characterized by its beautiful arches and upper and lower double structure, and is registered as a World Heritage Site along with the historic buildings of Porto. Both the upper and lower levels can be crossed on foot, and visitors can enjoy the wonderful view of the rich Douro River and the red-roofed cityscape stretching across the hills from different vantage points.
Vila Nova de Gaia
Vila Nova de Gaia is located across the Douro River from Porto. Portugal's third largest city is famous for its numerous warehouses where the specialty of port wine is aged. Touring the wine cellars and viewing the Historic Centre of Porto on the other side of the river from observation spots is a regular part of the trip. You may also want to take the cable car that connects the hilltop to the riverside and enjoy a short stroll on the air while having the quaint scenery all to yourself.
